Dr. Jorge Alió is the only Spaniard that appears for the third time in ‘The Power List 2018′, the list of 100 professionals drawn up by the magazine ‘The Ophthalmologist’
Dr. Jorge Alió has been ranked twelfth among the world’s most influential ophthalmologists. The list of 100 professionals, entitled “The Power List 2018”, was drawn up by the British magazine ‘The Ophthalmologist’, one of the most prestigious publications in the field, which was first published in 2014. It is the third time that Jorge Alió is mentioned in this classification, which is based on the votes of readers and the jury. Jorge Alió, the professor of Ophthalmology at the Miguel Hernandez University (UMH) of Elche, is the only Spaniard in the “The Power List 2018”, thanks to his research career that has led him to the creation of the concept of microincisional cataract surgery (MICS) and has made him a pioneer in the area of multifocal, accommodative, and toric IOLs, excimer laser refractive surgery and phakic IOLs.
It should be reminded that Jorge Alió, the academic of the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Valencian Community (RAMCV), has recently published an article ‘Cellular therapy of the corneal stroma: Real approach or science fiction?’ in the prestigious journal ‘Ophthalmology Times Europe’. The article is devoted to the research, carried out by the doctor and his collaborators, into extraocular mesenchymal stem cells, which could be an alternative to the classical cornea transplantation.
It is undoubtedly another milestone that Jorge Alió, the medical director of Vissum, the research institute and the largest eye institute in Europe, has reached in his career. Due to his constant study and dedication Jorge Alió has been recognized as one of the best doctors in Spain rated by patients from Top Doctors. In addition, Dr. Jorge Alió has been recently chosen as one of the ten doctors of ‘La élite del bisturí’ in Spain by El Mundo. It should be mentioned that he is the only ophthalmologist in the list.
Jorge Alio has been the author or co-author of over 775 scientific articles published in prestigious international journals, 360 book chapters (as editor or coeditor), and has received 103 international and national awards. Among them is the prestigious “ISRS Presidential Award” by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) for his dedication and contribution to the field of refractive surgery and the International Society of Refractive Surgery. In addition, just recently Vision Spain association awarded Dr. Jorge Alió with the Presidency of Honor.
He is also the creator and director of the first online course in refractive surgery from the Miguel Hernandez University, entitled “Scientific Methodology in Refractive, Cataract, and Cornea Surgery”
Moreover, he is a founder of Vissum Corporation and the Jorge Alió Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness, which performs humanitarian actions, such as project “Vision Nouadhibou”, which is devoted to the construction of the first eye hospital in Mauritania; as well as cultural initiatives such as the Painting Competition ‘Miradas’ which aims at raising public awareness of the importance of eye health and blindness prevention through art.
